Liable Lillian

Silly little one playing her own game
Down on the sidewalk next to her name
Which she wrote herself so anyone who came
Down the block would know just who is to blame
Little Lillian
Asks her mother to go out for ice cream
From outside the kitchen door through a screen
By the time she can answer, Lillian's in the street
The entire neighborhood can hear mother scream,
"Lillian!"
Inside the store, she doesn't take a while
Lillian walks directly to the aisle
Where the coolers have push-pops in a pile
Puts one in her pocket and exits past the single-file
Line of customers
Lillian eats it on her way to the park
Where she retreats till just before dark
On her way home she makes every dog bark
Knowing the neighbors are going to remark
'It's liably Lillian'

Free Rider

He was standing with a slow arch like his head weighed a ton
He spoke in unknown language but talked to no one
His chalk-stained pants stretched from here to half of the room
If he's a success, I hope my free ride will be coming soon
While I fill out applications to dead end jobs
Ask me dumb fucking questions, I'll turn my head and nod
Lebanaon, Tennessee, what can you do for me? Let's see
If the ride comes free
And it's all for you
And on the ride home I noticed things that were once invisible
As if I was beginning to learn things that are unknown
Tonight I will be working past closing time
Tomorrow I receive donations that were originally mine
And it's all for you

His father warned him way back then
Not to run around with these Hammond friends
He soon learned why when he left with them
In a herd from Hump down Michigan
Before the Renaissance, they ended dead
At the intersection of a new Hohman
Eager to sneak into the junk yard when
A shot was fired beside the pigpen
And with the thrust of a syringe
Ran to where Michigan becomes 5th
Yeah, that sounds about right
Those HMD boys looking for a ride
Wound up bored high on the swine
So father took you to the east side
I have to tell you I’m finely surprised
To hear you touch on Columbian pride
I looked up to your days at one time
But have recently been more inclined
To reverse my round trip
To where Michigan becomes 5th
My big orange truck ain’t discreet
But the kids still strolled the street
And older brother gave a wicked peek
Suppose that ain’t the worse you’ve seen
We live in a shaded dream
Where we get dragged back screen
Just to see we’ve lost control of the damned thing
When we all just wanted to leave
The constricting squeeze of the syringe
Into where Michigan becomes 5th
It’s a sling shot of a drift
Where Michigan becomes 5th
